I remember Tracy well from last year, always asking question after question when I was about to leave class. Some tutors I suppose would have found this annoying, but I found her constant questions inspirational. Her enthusiasm for Anatomy and Physiology was infectious. What a wonderful spirit she had!.

She always found ways to come out with top marks in the class. She never once let her personal life effect her studies. It was a privilege to be around her. I don’t think Tracy new this and to this day I don’t think she realizes how dynamic she was.

So I share with you these simple techniques she shared with me in this audio recording of how she made learning fun:

She used Visual Aids to help her study
Question and answer cards were used for Anatomy and Physiology
Labelling items on drawing help her visually
She made up games and played them with her children
Constantly focused kept her driving forward
And everywhere she went her books followed
To the point of becoming obsessive with learning this subject even when on holiday

Well was it worth it, yes cause she gained a distinction in Reflexology

Testimonial

‘I went to TLC for reflexology without any previous experience of this kind of treatment or what its benefits were. I have had many total body massages before which have always been enjoyable and relaxing. I was interested to see how much benefit the whole body could feel through reflexology. I had been suffering with sore neck for sometime which I had been meaning to go for treat for. TC was aware of this problem and worked on this area through the related area on my foot. Initially after the treatment I didn’t notice any relief but the following morning the pain was significantly better. Although I still had some discomfort around the shoulder blade area in my back the spot had been focused on in the session is now fine. It was quite surprising! I also found the treatment to be extremely relaxing and energizing. I felt that I entered a state of meditation, somewhere between awake and asleep, something that I had not experienced with conventional massage. After the session I felt energized and alert. It was a great experience and look forward to my next session with TLC!’

It seems hard to believe that the shops are filled with Xmas present and I haven’t even thought of such things. Well my Xmas shopping starts on 24th and finishes on that date.

However, I did get to thinking you might want to add a reflexology book to your wish list from Santa.

Over the years I have been privileged to research and read from many reflexology books, so I thought that I would share them with you. I normally spend about 15 minutes in the morning, researching my clients disorder, either on the internet or via books. I love finding solutions for my clients to their illness’s.

Oh, I just wanted to say! I am in know way an affiliate for any of the books. I’m just sharing what has worked for me.

So these are my top 7 reflexology books as follow, but in no particular order:

1) The Complete Guide to Reflexology by Ruth Hull
ISBN 9780955901133
This is a great book for students in training for level 2 and 3 training. I try to get my students to refer to this book, because it has excellent diagrams and illustrations. I found this very informative and illustrative.

2) Energy Medicine by Donna Eden
ISBN 0749919280
This is not a reflexology book, but it discusses chakras and energy medicine between the practitioner and client. A great reference book, but can be a little hard to read as to the way it is set out.

3) La Stone Therapy Manual by Mary Nelson
ISBN 9780749925079
Again this is not a reflexology book, but this was a guide for me, when I started delivering Hot Stone Reflexology. It taught me a lot about the use of the stones and the therapeutic effect on my clients.

4) An Introductory Guide to Reflexology by Louise Tucker
ISBN 978 1 903348 32 1
This is an ITEC recommended book, that I give to my students because it’s on the ITEC syllabus.

5) Better Health with Foot Reflexology by Dwight C Byers
ISBN 1891130005
This was one of the original books that I learnt from whilst studying reflexology 16 years ago. It was a privilege to be introduced to this book. I thought it was simple and easy to grasp.

5) Reflexology The Definitive Practitioners Manual by Beryl Crane
ISBN 1862041253
Fantastic research book, this was a great book that helped me when I passed my exams. I still use this book for reference. It has information on meridian, ears, and hands reflexology.

6) The Reflexology Handbook by Laura Norman
ISBN 0861889126
Again I love this book. It is set out clearly and positively. Excellent use of language and affirmations whilst working specific organs. For those who want the more holistic side!

Hand reflexology is an effective and deeply relaxing therapy. Teresa Rich, ATL, MICHT, explains its history, benefits and uses. Workshop in Hand Reflexology are delivered on 23rd September in Bournemouth 10-4pm for reflexologists.

Our hands are of the utmost importance when it comes to touching, sensing and communicating with others. Perhaps this is why they have such a powerful role in the healing process, whether they are providing a treatment – or indeed, receiving one.
Hand reflexology is a very simple yet effective therapy that most clients find pleasant and deeply relaxing. Although some consider it to be the poor relation of foot reflexology, hand reflexology is often more convenient and can be just as effective as its sister therapy.

History and principles

Many reflexology books make reference to an ancient Egyptian painting found in the tomb of Ankhmahor at Saqqara that depicts pressure being applied to the hands and feet in a way that looks similar to reflexology as we know and practise it today. If this picture was from the tomb in question and does actually depict reflexology in its earliest form, this would indicate that the therapy is more than four and a half millennia old.
Ancient Chinese writings also allude to a pressure therapy that involves the fingers and thumbs, as well as wringing or rubbing the hands together in order to benefit the body as a whole.
However, it wasn’t until the 1920s that Dr William Fitzgerald wrote a book about ‘zone therapy’, explaining how the body is divided into 10 vertical zones, which run from the top of the head to the tips of the toes and fingers.
All of the organs and structures that fall within the same zone are believed to be linked by a flow of energy and can be ‘accessed’ or rebalanced by applying pressure to specific points on the feet or hands where their relevant zone terminates – a theory Eunice Ingham went on to develop in greater detail in the 1930s.
Why foot reflexology became more popular than hand reflexology remains unclear. However, Eunice states in her first book, ‘Stories the feet can tell…’, ‘Reflexes exist in our hands in the same proportion, location, and so on, as in our feet. Only it is more difficult to locate them for they are not so pronounced and the added amount of exercise we give our hands keeps the tenderness worked out, which would otherwise be found.[1]
It is true that the reflexes are much deeper in the hands and therefore more pressure is required in order to produce the same results as foot reflexology. However, if a gentler treatment is desirable for a particular client, then hand reflexology may be more preferable to foot reflexology as it is generally considered less powerful.

Hand Reflexology Workshop on 23rd September 10-4pm in Bournemouth.

Ann first came to me in 1997 through a recommendation by another client. She is a retired lady with osteoarthritis throughout her body and especially in her hands.

History

As a result of her condition, Ann was finding it extremely difficult and painful to carry out everyday activities that involved her hands, such as opening jars and putting on clothes, and she often had to rely on others for help.
At her initial consultation, Ann was evidently distressed by the pain she was experiencing as a result of her condition. On examination, her hands appeared deformed, inflamed and stiff, and their colour indicated that she had poor circulation. Due to the arthritis she was also experiencing pain in her hips, knees, shoulders and feet.
At the time, Ann was taking several anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief, but the dose has been gradually reduced since she has been having regular hand reflexology treatments. Her initial treatment plan involved weekly hand reflexology, followed by monthly appointments.

Aftercare

Ann continues with daily hand exercises, consisting of squeezing a ball in the palm of her hands, pressing her fingers together and rotating her wrists. She follows a very healthy diet, drinks lots of water and tries to avoid foods that antagonise her arthritis. In between treatments she uses a TENS machine and soaks her hands in Dead Sea salts. Whenever the pain returns, she increases her hand reflexology treatments to once a week.

Current health status

Over the years, the arthritic pain has become more manageable and Ann has experienced episodes where her hands have been pain-free. She has regained the use of her hands and this has given her more independence as she no longer relies heavily on others for support. Ann is now a very happy lady with a positive outlook on life.
